Ohio Governor Signs New Water Quality Rules

Friday, April 3, 2015, Governor Kasich signed the Clean Lake Erie Act into law. New rules to improve water quality in Lake Erie include:

  1. Prohibiting the spread of manure on frozen or saturated ground.
  2. Monitoring phosphorous at water treatent plants.
  3. Establishing an Office of Harmfal Algae and Response within the Ohio EPA.
  4. Working to end dredging and open-lake disposal in Lake Erie.

The bill also transfers the Agriculture Pollution Abatement Program from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to the Department of Agriculture, and includes an emergency clause that will put the bill into effect at the start of this year's growing season.
