Ohio State's Stone Lab receives $2.7M for new lab, technology (via Cleveland.com)

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Ohio State University's Stone Laboratory plans to build a $1.9 million laboratory on Gibraltar Island to study Lake Erie environmental issues. The money is part of the $36 million Clean Lake 2020 bill passed by the Ohio legislature in July. The bill also includes:

  • $500,000 for high-tech equipment, including incubators, nutrient analyzers and scales, for the new lab
  • $250,000 for real-time sensors to install in Lake Erie or its tributaries

Stone Laboratory is the home of Ohio Sea Grant, one of 33 federal Sea Grant programs aim to protect American coasts and waters. Working with Ohio State, Ohio Sea Grant offers facilities, field work equipment, boats and housing for researchers studying Lake Erie from its private 6.5-acre Gibraltar Island in the harbor of Put-in-Bay.
